Book Six is “The Kitchen God’s Wife” by Amy Tan. Ages ago I read the Joy Luck Club, so it was nice to revisit Amy Tan. It is a story of friends, of mothers and daughters, of war and secrets. Pearl and Winne don’t have the best relationship. The book alternates between Pearl, the American born daughter and Winne, her Chinese emigre mother. Most of the story takes place in the past, telling Winnie’s story of her lonely childhood and abandonment by her mother, of her nightmarish arranged marriage and of her strength and courage to survive the war.
New book design “PERU” includes all 3,164 photos from my trip to Peru. The concept is to show how many digital images are produced over a short amount of time. The books pages show the photos in order over a three week period. Colors and patterns emerge and create page texture. See the entire book at blurb: http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/2306193
Book Five is “Mother of Pearl” by Melinda Haynes. I’ve had this books for years but had never gotten around to reading it. I may have started once but stopped, so it was a pleasure to discover the wonderful characters of Even, Joody Two Sun, Valuable, Canaan and Grace. My approach to the jacket design was based on the characters and the 1950′s. I decided that in some cases, the cover typography would be on the spine and not on the cover, as on covers three, five and six. Cover two is based upon the popular vintage Hazel Atlas glasses from the 1950′s. Covers one and four feature the photography of Francois Robert.
